New Minister of Culture in Norway

Among several other changes in the Norwegian government is the Minister of Culture. Anniken Huitfeldt is moving from Ministry of Culture to be the new Minister of Labour. The new Minister of Culture will be Hadia Tadjik. In contrast to the countries around us, we in Norway have seen a strong focus on cultural life from the Labour Party in the last few years and it is therefore interesting to see what this change will mean for the future development in this important area.

I wish them both good luck and hope they will work together to further professionalize cultural life in Norway and to create exciting jobs in the cultural field.

Kong Drum Designer

These days I often turn to Kong for creation of drums and beats. I wasn't using it very much for a long time but I have recently re-discovered how powerful it actually is. I usually use a bunch of Matrix pattern sequencers connected to the pads gate in to trigger the sound. For me, the advantage of using the Matrix pattern sequencers instead of writing MIDI notes to a MIDI track is that it's very easy to create less conventional rhythms by adding/editing steps (notes) in the pattern while the sequencer is playing.

Patch for the Thor synth in Reason

I'm sharing this simple patch I made for the Thor synth in Propellerhead Reason. I call it a pad but actually I'm using it mostly as a bass sound in my ambient works. It's inspired by a sound used by Robert Henke (aka Monolake).

Enjoy!

Thor patch: Infinite Air Pad

Edit: I'm using only one FM Pair Osc, one Low Pass Filter and Thor's delay. For more movement I suggest to add an LFO at slow rate (approx. 0,22 Hz) and enable Key Sync. Send the LFO to destination Osc1 FM Amt in the modulation matrix. There you go.

Goosebumps in the Oslo Concert Hall this eveing?

I’m ready to enjoy contemporary art music in Oslo Concert Hall this evening.

http://www.oslofilharmonien.no/internet/oslofil.nsf/pages/oslo-culture-night-free-concert

As part of the program of Ultimafestivalen – an anual festival for contemporary music in Oslo – the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing pieces of :
I’m not familiar with the works that will be played this evening but some of my best musical experiences as a listener comes from hearing these composers works performed at different venues in Oslo over the last decade.

On the stage: Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Christian Eggen, Nordic Voices and 3-D video designed by Boya Bøckman.

A member of the orchestra has promised me a great experience and I do expect to be inspired.

Cheers,

So I have a blog

Welcome!

Why a blog?
This blog is created on pure impulse, and my intention is to share my highly subjective thoughts on the big and small things in music production and sound design. My posts will come at irregular intervals. Do not hold your breath.

Subtractive and FM synthesis.
This afternoon I'll be packing my equipment and leave the city for a music making weekend in solitude at the family hut in the mountains. There will be plenty of time to follow my big interest at the moment: subtractive and FM synthesis. You're not impressed? Of course not. Subtractive and FM synthesis wasn't invented yesterday and everyone who has ever laid his hands on a synthesizer are acquainted with the terms.

Obsession
Because I'm a bit tired of big sample libraries at the moment I have developed an obsession (one of many) for creating most of the sounds used in my compositions using common analog synthesis methods. Moreover, instead of spending endless hours browsing for inspiring factory patches in my virtual synths I find it a lot more interesting creating my own from scratch.

More of that and everything else later. Now I have a blog.

Cheers,
