These days I often turn to Kong for creation of drums and beats. I wasn't using it very much for a long time but I have recently re-discovered how powerful it actually is. I usually use a bunch of Matrix pattern sequencers connected to the pads gate in to trigger the sound. For me, the advantage of using the Matrix pattern sequencers instead of writing MIDI notes to a MIDI track is that it's very easy to create less conventional rhythms by adding/editing steps (notes) in the pattern while the sequencer is playing.
